2012 Games - Mass Effect 3. Preview by PC-gamer
Most likely, as you're reading this, you already know very well who your Commander Shepard is and what he has been through. Otherwise, you are missing out on one of the outstanding narratives of the last five years. So what are you waiting for? You have a few months left! Come back when you have a seriously well-founded opinion on the nature of Shepard's chromosomes.
According to executive producer Casey Hudson, Shepard in [Mass Effect 3](/games?search=Mass Effect 3) is a combination of the character you created and the fundamental questions that have arisen since the first game. "All versions of Commander Shepard share something in common. In particular, he is just an average person who has risen to prominence due to special circumstances. We are experimenting with new ways to put people in Shepard's mind, making them feel the commander’s inner struggle more deeply."
At the heart of this struggle are the Reapers, ominous machine-gods who have finally arrived after two preparatory games. It essentially represents a galactic-scale expansion of the companion-collecting system from [Mass Effect 2](/games?search=Mass Effect 2). As you progress, you gather a force of capital ships, special squads, and massive armies, each of which constitutes a military asset.
Roll one, roll two... the head rolls.
"As Commander Shepard, you fight to build a massive alliance and secure military assets across the galaxy," Hudson explains, "But how effective all this will be in the final confrontation depends on the overall efforts in the war. If your allies have died, they will not be able to join you in the decisive battle. But if you keep everything under control, they will be ready to contribute to the fight."
This is where cooperative multiplayer comes into play. Separate from Shepard's story, you and your friends can take on the responsibility of teams of operatives engaged in battles across the galaxy where the Normandy cannot. Progressing in multiplayer boosts the readiness factor, replenishing your military assets in single-player.
Dancing in Mass Effect style
This high-level mechanic is supported by an revamped combat system and upgrade system. The main focus is on weapon modification, giving you the freedom to customize the weapons to your liking. Hudson shares his favorite moments: "I'm thrilled about mods that increase the power and rate of fire for sniper rifles, allowing you to take down enemies from a great distance while peppering them with quick shots before reloading. Using a scope on a pistol is an interesting way to enhance the effectiveness of this otherwise fairly primitive weapon."
The battle for the galaxy begins!
We generally know what Shepard's final onstage appearance will look like, but nothing specific yet. Using the Mass Effect save transfer system has created one of the longest gaming narratives, and it would be nice to reach its conclusion without spoilers.
