Ridiculous? Super 8 and the Half-Life Universe.
*[Updated "Ice Cream Brand?"]*
Hello to all the readers of gamer.ru. Recently, the long-awaited project by J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, "Super 8," was released in Russia. Initially, I saw this project in a playable teaser for Portal 2 and was quite surprised by such an innovative form of advertising. If anyone doesn’t remember, I suggest a screenshot for viewing:
So, I am a fan of the series Fringe, as well as someone who often searches for things that one shouldn’t be searching for at all (i.e., hidden meanings or Easter eggs). Unfortunately, I didn’t see any Easter eggs directly related to the series. But I was surprised to see the Portal universe in this movie! Don’t believe me? Well, let’s start with the fact that during the movie, I was annoying my friend who just came to watch the film, unlike me, with various jokes like "look, that guy in the yellow Mustang looks like Cave Johnson from Half-Life" - to which he chuckled in disbelief. At first, I thought jokes were jokes, but what if it really is so? Then I thought, why would Abrams pay Valve to create a playable teaser? Close ties with Gabe? Well, Lost was a clear example of those ties. Remember the appearance of Jack’s father with a case on the island, like some G-man from the Half-Life universe, or during some flashbacks, you could see people playing good old Half-Life. So, moving on to the movie, I already mentioned the alien spaceship. If you have seen the movie, you remember what the alien ship was made of, namely some undefined substance or matter realized in a cube. When I got home, I decided to Google the Steam forum and see if anyone else had thought about this, and what did I find! A close connection between the film's chronology and everything happening in Valve games? Almost, almost, but better check the screenshot of the post.
Let's face the facts:
1-Super 8 interactive trailer on Portal 2;
2-Alien plot;
3-Alien sounds in the trailer sounded like HL ones;
4-Valve's interest in bringing the HL universe to movies;
5-Super 8 is set in Ohio, 1979;
6-Cave Johnson died in 1979;
7-Aperture Science was located in Ohio;
8-Some time ago (this year) there was a rumor that Valve was working on a new franchise.
It's just too much coincidence??
What do you think?
Let's face the facts:
1-The interactive trailer of the movie in the game Portal 2;
2-The alien plot;
3-The sounds of aliens are the same as in Half-Life;
4-Valve has long wanted to bring its universe to the movies;
5-The setting of Super 8 takes place in Ohio in 1979;
6-Cave Johnson died in 1979;
7-Aperture Science was located in Ohio;
8-Some time ago (this year) there was a rumor that Valve was working on a new franchise.
What do you think about this? Simple coincidences. Hmm...
Also at one point we see a gas station clerk with a walkman named Breen.
There's an offhand mention of 'Judith' in the movie-within-a-movie that plays during the end credits, but that might not be.
The guy working at the gas station was named Breen.
And also, ‘Judith’, the movie within a movie in the credits, but that’s probably not it.
Strangely, but Wikipedia also has some data about this:
In the movie, there is a yellow Buick Skylark with vertical stripes on the hood, which matches the car from the game Half-Life: Episode Two, of which the director is a fan.

Also, in the movie at the 20-minute mark, after the crash, the main characters discover cubes resembling the Companion Cube from the game Portal.
What struck me most was the chronology of events in the film; everything hints too strongly. No matter what people say about the film, overall it's about the relationships of teenagers partly and their families, which upset me—I wanted science fiction, and there are only two lines of it, but what lines! I would say portal-related!
There was a moment in the movie when the youth was breaking into the biology teacher's van with a crowbar, it’s surprising that only one of the boys could use it, namely, the guy resembling Gordon Freeman. In the film, he is a bit cowardly and not talkative. Perhaps after these events, he overcame himself, studied hard, and started working at Black Mesa?
More humorous similarity; let’s assume that later this character found the righteous path and founded a laboratory; more nonsense, but every theory has the right to exist, for example, considering the cube, as far as I remember, Cave was far from being a scientist, right? But since Cave died in 1979, and our character is alive and well, this variant doesn’t hold water. Although if you look closely, what enterprise the main character’s mother worked at, and this character. Hmm... In principle, it is not recommended to perceive this film as a prequel to Half-Life; otherwise, it will turn into nonsense, but as an element containing Easter eggs to it, I think yes, this is such "waffle trolling".
There was a lot in Portal related to the moon, regarding the plot and the principle of teleportation. So, in the movie, although it wasn't highlighted (personally, I didn’t notice), there was an ice cream brand called "Rocket Poppeteers". Seems like the moon and nothing more, the brand was created specifically for the movie...
This post will be updated with fresh ideas and facts. P.S. this is my first one.
