The action of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 unfolds in two time periods: the near past and the near future, respectively. During the conflict between the USA and the USSR (the 1980s), players can take control of either Alex Mason or Frank Woods. It should be noted that these characters are the main heroes of the first Black Ops. In turn, in 2025, players will play as David Mason, the son of Alex Mason. However, at certain moments, players can also take control of other characters: both protagonists and antagonists.
The antagonist (negative character) is a one-eyed evil genius named Raul Menendez. Once, he was an ordinary drug dealer, but then he transformed into the most terrifying terrorist in the history of human civilization. What caused such a transformation? This is what David Mason tries to find out with the help of the frail and sick Frank Woods, who by 2025 has turned into a white-haired old man. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 can be fully called a proper reboot of the series. The developers at Treyarch decided to break away from established canons and added numerous innovations to the game. For example, in Black Ops 2, there is greater freedom in terms of mission completion. Now players can choose the path they will take to reach the checkpoint. They can either go head-on under gunfire or find some bypass routes. The options are not that many, but it should be remembered that Black Ops 2 is primarily a linear shooter, albeit somewhat transformed compared to other games in the series.
Also, in the second part of Black Ops, players can influence the storyline with their actions in general. For instance, one could kill a character at the beginning of the campaign, and then he will not appear in subsequent missions. Conversely, if they leave him alive, he can be seen again and again. Important decisions must be made in almost every assignment, and all of them, one way or another, change the subsequent story. It is worth noting that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has several intriguing, and sometimes shocking endings.
Another innovation is a chain of additional missions included in the so-called Strike Force mode. The player must manage the actions of the units they have, carrying out various commands. In some cases, bases need to be defended, and in others, it is necessary to attack enemy strongholds. Groups of fighters and robots (it is 2025, after all) can be managed through a special tactical mode. It should also be said that any soldier or drone can be taken under direct control.
As tradition from previous parts, the zombie mode with numerous enhancements has migrated to Black Ops 2. Multiplayer, as before, boasts a variety of modes, including a multi-team battle option – up to four teams can fight simultaneously on one map.
