Trine 2 is the sequel to the magnificent platformer Trine, released by the Finnish studio Frozenbyte in 2009. In the new game, we will again manage a group of three heroes, each of whom can be controlled at a certain moment.
We still have the wizard Amadeus, the thief archer Zoe, and the brave knight with a hammer named Pontius. By combining their abilities in various situations, we can quickly navigate through difficult locations with minimal losses. This means you won't be able to play as a single character you particularly like throughout the entire game. Zoe is very helpful in situations where we need to overcome the next obstacle, and she can now slow down time. The knight’s main weapon is his strength; only he can withstand a large number of enemies. Amadeus possesses various magical spells, including the ability of telekinesis – he can move objects.
The game has become less linear thanks to a greater number of puzzles and solutions. The levels have become larger and somewhat more challenging, so to avoid replaying the level from the beginning, the developers introduced the ability to save at any point in the game. If a player feels that progressing through the next level will be problematic, they can adjust the difficulty level. Trine 2 is much more forgiving in its requirements, so situations where players would get stuck on a troublesome area for an hour or more will now be practically non-existent, of course, unless the gamer is devoid of any strategic thinking.
The world of Trine 2 has become more lively and dynamic, with an increased density of objects on each level. Many of these objects need to be interacted with and utilized for our purposes. For example, the caps of giant mushrooms are no longer just surfaces to stand on. Jumping on them, the heroes immediately glide, as the mushrooms are covered in slime. And there are many such examples.
One of the main innovations in Trine 2 is the introduction of a cooperative play mode. Players can play both in online mode and without an internet connection. In the first case, gamers from all over the world will join you, taking control of one of the available characters. In the second case, you can play with friends sitting at the same computer.
The cooperative mode simultaneously makes the gameplay easier and more complex. While in single-player you could instantly switch to another hero and perform an action, now you must rely on your friend’s experience and gaming skills. On the other hand, the cooperative mode makes Trine 2 much more fun.
