DDoS attacks on the GRU
If you've recently encountered errors, lags, 502s, and other joys of the internet on GAMER.ru - yes, we're aware.
For about a month, the site has been under constant DDoS attacks. On average, there are about 500-1000 requests per second from approximately 100,000 different IP addresses - mostly user IPs from around the world. Presumably infected smart kettles and robot vacuums.
The server is holding up well overall; most requests go through normally, but sometimes it does get hit hard enough that errors pop up.
At one point, especially many requests were coming from Singapore, so it had to be entirely blocked. So if you happen to be reading us from there - sorry, you got caught in the crossfire =)
Nothing critical: the site is alive, the data is in place, the server isn't burning, and the admin is fine for now.
Is it possible to make it so that nothing ever breaks down? Of course, we've tried various anti-DDoS protections - Cloudflare performs excellently, but it doesn't work for half of the users in the Russian internet. And, well, the most advanced Russian equivalent, DDoS-Guard, doesn't work at all - it lets through 95% of the attacking traffic.
So the current strategy is simple: it works - and that's that). We added a couple of cores to the virtual machine's config, which made things a bit better.
Besides, it has been more amusing before. About a year ago, we were DDoSed with about a million IPs, and the load reached 3-5 thousand requests per second. However, back then, the attackers' enthusiasm lasted only a couple of days...
If it starts to work really poorly - then, of course, we'll fix it. Meanwhile, thank you for your patience and for continuing to visit GAMER.ru, despite attempts by someone very persistent to make the internet a little less fun =)
