Dragons: Classification, Guides, and More

Dragons are one of the strongest and most powerful races from Akvair, once widely spread across Tamriel. Despite their frightening appearance, these creatures are very intelligent, have their own language, and can even understand others. Their language can serve as powerful magic for the Dragonborn (or for those who have dedicated their lives to this language – the Greybeards). For a long time, it was believed that dragons were extinct. This was the case until they reappeared in the lands of Skyrim. In the game, there are six types of dragons, in addition to unique ones: Black, Ice, Blood, Ancient, Elder, and Bone.

Black Dragon

After the Snake People devoured all the humans, they attempted to transition to Dragons. They managed to conquer the Red Dragons, but black dragons came to the rescue of Po-Tun. A terrible war broke out, weakening both cats and serpents, and all the Dragons perished.

Blood Dragon

Blood Dragons appeared in Skyrim after Alduin's awakening. They can be recognized by their greenish-gray skin, distinctive “crown” on their heads, and huge, fluffy tails with fan-shaped tips. Their spawn begins at the 20th level of the hero, their attack is fire-based (sometimes ice).

Ice Dragon

Ice Dragons appeared in Skyrim… surprise… after Alduin's awakening. They can be encountered starting from level 10. They can be recognized by their shiny, light skin and massive spikes protruding from it. Their attack is always ice-based, but in addition to normal damage, it also slows the player down and reduces stamina.

Ancient Dragon

Ancient Dragons appeared in Skyrim after you know what. This type is characterized by its reddish-brown skin and shovel-shaped tail tip. Their attacks can be either fire or ice. Be careful, as this dragon is one of the strongest in the game, and its power can rival even that of the Elder Dragon! Besides dealing heavy damage, their attacks also drain stamina. These giants appear after the hero reaches level 32.

Elder Dragon

Like all others, they appeared in the lands of Skyrim after Alduin's awakening. They are characterized by their orange-red skin with dark spots, spikes, and shovel-shaped (like the Ancients) tail tips. This type is VERY resilient and can use both fire and ice attacks. They appear when the hero reaches level 40.

Bone Dragon

Typically, you can encounter this type while in a cave (or another dungeon location). One of them is even part of a quest and appears in Labyrinthian for the College of Winterhold quest. They do not fly, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous. Also, they have no soul. You can also encounter them outside of Labyrinthian (for example, in the quest involving Alduin's resurrection).

How to Defeat a Dragon?

No matter how many guides there are on the internet for killing dragons, there is no clear tactic as everyone has their own approach and development. However, a few tips can be given. For example, always pay attention to the dragon's attack. Fire dragons are 50% resistant to fire attacks but 25% more vulnerable to ice attacks (ice dragons are similar).
