Well, the subject.
I noticed that many are sitting on Steam, but not everyone is playing TF2, L4D, and so on. So I took the liberty to create an IRC channel on the Dalnet network. Below is your guide on how, where, and what.
Mini-guide to connecting
For those who know how to use IRC:
Server: irc.chatnet.ru
Channel: #gamer.ru
Password: there is no password, leave the field empty
If the client cannot connect to the server (which sometimes happens)
Use alternative servers:
irc.dalnet.ru
irc.dalnet.org.ru
irc.avtograd.ru
irc.tic-tac.ru
If none of this helped - try googling the word dalnet and find some other server. They all are connected with each other anyway.
Now, let's get to the clients and connections
Clients
In addition to various clients, there exists a multitude of plugins and scripts for IRC, designed to ease the heavy fate of the internet chatterbox. They are installed on top of your client, after which you gain access to some nice and convenient features (sending information from WinAmp about what music you're currently listening to to a specific channel, a nickname change timer via the context menu).
Most clients come with the most necessary plugins pre-installed by the developers.
The most common client is mIRC. Probably, we will communicate using it.
(This guide is about it, but you can use whatever you want. From plugins for Miranda to QIP and other stuff)

Suppose you have downloaded the Russian version of mIRC and you can't wait to start having virtual conversations. How do you handle this beast? Well, let's start from scratch.
Run mIRC. When the client loads, close the registration window. A settings window will pop up. At this moment, we are only interested in the group "Connection".
We will probably use the ChatNet server. Add it if it is missing from the drop-down list "IRC Network". This is how it is done:
- press the "Add" button.
- in the "Description" field, you can write anything. This is for your own navigation. I suggest "ChatNet".
- in the "IRC Server" field, enter "irc.chatnet.ru" (or any other from the list).
- in the "Port(s)" field, enter "6667".
- the "Groups" field can be left empty. It is used for sorting. I recommend writing "ChatNet" again, for navigation.
- press the "Add" button.
Let's look at the other settings.
- in the "Your Name" field, enter your own name. What you write here can be seen by any user. It is mandatory but its content is not controlled. You can write anything like "supermegacoolhacker".
- in the "E-mail" field, enter your e-mail. This is also mandatory.
- in the "Nick" field, enter your nickname. This is the name you will communicate with.
- in the "Other" field, enter a backup nick. If your main nickname suddenly becomes unavailable, you will log into the server with this name.
That's all. Choose "ChatNet" from the server list and click OK. To connect to the server, click "Connect" (the lightning icon).
If you did everything right, after a while a window "Favorite Channels" will appear. You can just close it :)
Now it's time to register your nickname. This is not mandatory, but in this case, your nickname can be stolen at any time.
The syntax is as follows. In any mIRC window type:
/nick [your nick]
/nickserv register [your password] [your email address]
After that, you will receive an email containing instructions to confirm your nickname.
Suppose you have confirmed your nickname. Now, for identification, every time you join the server under your nickname, you will have to write (this action can be automated, see below):
/nickserv identify [your password]
For example, let's say we are called Vasya, our email address is vasya@pupkin.com, and we chose the word "pupkin" for the password. In that case, type (in any mIRC window):
/nick Vasya
/nickserv register pupkin vasya@pupkin.com
*Confirm registration*
/nickserv identify pupkin
Now we are sitting on the server under the registered nickname. What now? Now we enter the channel. To do this, type:
/join #gamer.ru
#gamer.ru That's it. You can communicate.
About automation
To avoid typing various commands every time, this simple action can be automated. In the options (under the "Connection" heading), navigate to the "Automation" section. Check the box "Perform the following commands on connect." In the window, write all those commands that you don’t want to type manually every time. The text should look approximately like this:
/nick [your nick]
/nickserv identify [your nickname's password]
/join #gamer.ru
For convenience, it also makes sense to check the box "Connect on startup" in the "Connection-Options" section.
About registration
mIRC is distributed on a Shareware basis. After 30 days of using the program, you will have to register it, of course, not for free.
