Character Development Guide
The first time I played the game, I noticed that the main character is weaker than a rat. Literally. A couple of carrion-eaters can chew up the hero without any problems; the weapons leave much to be desired, there is no armor at all, and even less ore. We are just trying to acclimate in an unfamiliar world; everything is new and interesting to us. And it's frustrating when in the same Oblivion, you were the king of the hill, and here, stepping into the forest, you were eaten by one wolf or a couple of rat-creatures. And you couldn't even deal one point of damage to that wolf! Because its defense exceeds your attack level. But recently, after multiple playthroughs of Gothic 2, I decided to play the first Gothic. Luckily, a friend had a version from 'Snezhkov' with a wonderful translation. Without thinking long, I started playing and was greatly surprised. It was much easier to play than during my first runs! So, after considering my actions, I decided to share with other players. It may seem trivial and simple to some, but it will be useful for newcomers to the game. So, let's begin.
The first thing we do on our way to the Old Camp is kill weak monsters along the way. Before each fight, we save, so we don't have to defeat the enemy a second time due to accidental death. When we get to the river, we shouldn't approach the flies at all; they will eat us...
So, you've arrived at the camp. Talk to all the "named" NPCs, complete all possible quests, and enjoy the process. Right now, the most important thing to do is to ask the guy from the New Camp, or from the 'Brotherhood', or vice versa, to lead you to the camp. For both paths, you will gain enough experience to achieve the first, or maybe even the second level. The main thing is to "engage" with all strong enemies and then retreat towards the guide. He will knock the spirit out of the monsters, and you will receive the experience for their kills. Probably, the Nameless one learns something when he sees who kills whom. :)
So, you've visited all the camps, completed the possible quests, and now the question arises – what parameter to develop? What can I say – regardless of who you become – a fire mage, a mercenary, a water mage, a guard, a ghost – you need to take the first level of one-handed weapon mastery and increase your strength by 10 points. Why? First, on the way to the Swamp or New Camp, you’ve picked up excellent axes from the goblin corpses, and secondly, to gain enough experience, you will need to exterminate wildlife, and for that, you will need good damage. To kill flies, carrion-eaters, and rat-creatures, you just need 20 points of strength and an axe with 29 damage.
If you plan to follow the path of a mage – don’t waste the training points you've received; you will need them for magical development.
And if you decide to go the warrior route… Things are much simpler. Invest points into one-handed weapon mastery and put the rest into strength. You also have the option to spend some training points on theft skills to earn some extra money, though we will talk about earning ore in another article.
So, let’s assume you’ve completed all the main starting quests and developed to level 6-7. If you’re a mage, you can only develop further once you become a mage, as you won’t have enough skills to kill the same wolves. If you’ve followed the "strength" path, it's easier. After developing strength to a certain level, for example – to 45, you can obtain one of the best weapons in the first chapter – the 'Lars's axe'. And of course, to get it, you need to give Lars a smack in the face. Don’t worry; his "guard" won’t attack you but will quietly watch the fight. The main thing to do before this battle is to save. So, approaching Lars from behind, start dealing slashing side strikes; as soon as he grabs his weapon – block and continue the attack. In a few attempts, you will be able to get the coveted axe with 65 damage.
With it, you will easily destroy wolves and other stronger enemies. Just remember – you need to save very often, since you have extremely low health. And you will need to lure all enemies out one by one. Even a well-leveled hero can be defeated...
Now, you can join one of the camps, continue along the plot, and not face wild difficulties with enemies, as you will have excellent weapons and very high damage.
P.S. It's better not to approach Lars with his axe. Otherwise, you'll get into another fight, shouting: "That's my weapon! Give it back, bastard!" :)
