Announced a global post-apocalyptic strategy Afterworld
Known for its historical grand strategies, Paradox Interactive has decided to venture into a post-apocalyptic setting and announced the game Afterworld at gamescom, which will soon be released on PC.
The action unfolds across North America amidst deadly wastelands and the ruins of the old world, where the last remnants of humanity survive. Players will face strategic tasks, grapple with moral dilemmas, and lead a handful of survivors to create an empire spanning the entire continent.
From the ruins of the former world, a new era is born. Afterworld is a grand strategy game from Paradox Development Studio, the creators of Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV, featuring a richly crafted post-apocalyptic world filled with events and stories. Players will unite the survivors, shape their tribe's character, and establish an empire. Mastering the game is easy, but surviving is harder: Afterworld will gradually unfold into a deep and multi-layered strategy that fans have come to expect from Paradox games.
“Afterworld will be the first Paradox game in a decade not tied to real history; I can't wait to see what stories our players create in it,” said Dan Lind, game director of Afterworld. “This is the first world we've crafted from scratch in many years, and the first we've eagerly destroyed even before the game begins. The remnants of the old world still wait to be found. But what will come to replace this world is up to the players to decide.”
In Afterworld, players find themselves in procedurally generated wastelands of North America, in a strategic sandbox where each playthrough creates new stories. At first, players will need to search for food, water, and shelter, reforming the foundations of civilization. As their tribe grows, they will have to make tough decisions, establishing the laws and moral principles of their people, and eventually they will also clash with other rising empires to decide the fate of the entire continent.
The developers of Afterworld offer players:
Experience the past, unlock the future
- Start the game as inhabitants of a shelter forced to leave a crumbling nuclear bunker, or fanatics searching for their goddess in the dusty lands, or choose from several other backstories. Establish the first settlements in the wastelands and decide what kind of people you are destined to become.
- Collect food, water, and fuel in conditions where death lurks at every turn. The search for scarce resources will be a challenging trial, but under your guidance, the group of survivors will adapt and acquire new skills and methods to obtain the hidden riches of this land.
- Explore the procedurally generated North America. The landscape and geography remain recognizable, but resources, tribes, and threats change with every game, creating a new strategic “sandbox” filled with unexpected plot twists in each playthrough.
- Regain lost technologies by exploring the territory. The dynamic tree of ideas opens new paths for development based on your discoveries and experiences. Reach the river and master irrigation. Encounter another tribe and uncover the idea of organized religion. Your actions will determine what your society can become.
- Organize caravans and set up supply lines to exploit the riches of new lands, and when the land can no longer provide, relocate your entire tribe. Your first settlement won't necessarily remain the capital forever, and raids on rivals are always one of the possible solutions.
Unite or remain solo
- Decide whom to trust. Engage in clashes with hostile tribes, negotiate for trade, recruit wandering tribes into your growing state, or take what you need by force. Other survivors are both your primary resource and your greatest threat.
- Develop the laws of the new society. Decide who gets scarce resources, who earns a voice in leadership, and what values your nation will uphold. New discoveries and crises will constantly alter the needs of your people, forcing you to make complex choices without easy answers.
- Discover powerful technologies that survived from the old world: they can entirely reshape your state's capabilities if you obtain them before your rivals. But be cautious: the same power that destroyed the old world could also doom the new one.
- Conquer the dusty lands alone or alongside other players – both in competitive multiplayer mode and in cooperative play.
Protect your empire and determine what the new world will become
- Expand your holdings across North America. As you settle new lands and exhaust resources, forge alliances or wage brutal wars for control of what's left. Just one wrong decision can lead to a new collapse.
- Make decisions that will have consequences for future generations. A lack of food can lead to famine, and a political mistake can cause a rift in your land. What are you willing to sacrifice to preserve your empire?
- Uncover the buried history of the old world and face moral dilemmas while building the new one. Decide how to allocate vital resources, respond to the emergence of new religions, and shape society's attitude towards those changed by mutations or technology. Every crisis alters the very soul of your empire.
- Challenge the Ancients, the immortal rulers of the old world, whose lives are sustained by forgotten technologies. They have their own ideas about who should rule, and they have no intention of relinquishing power willingly.
- Shape the character of your empire and determine its fate. Will you revive the old orders? Or choose the path of enlightenment to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past? Will your empire rise above the ashes of the old world?
