Resource discovery and system scanning

Why is resource scanning necessary? The galaxy is vast, and here you can find many useful things: fuel, artifacts, credits, and even military resources. Naturally, all of this will help us in the war against the Reapers.

Scanning and Scanning

Resource scanning differs from what we saw in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. In the first game, it was the unmatched Mako, and in the second, it was the grueling surface scanning of planets. In the third, we see a completely different picture.

Scanning occurs as follows: when you press the right mouse button, a pulse shoots out from the "Normandy". If there is something in that zone that might be useful for the war, a corresponding mark appears on the map. The area of interest can be a planet or the barren space between planets, where we may stumble upon shipwrecks or asteroids with something interesting inside.

Approaching the highlighted fragment on the map, you can study the object. If it's a planet, you'll have to scan it as we did in Mass Effect 2. Once you find an object, a probe is sent from the "Normandy".

Types of Resources

There are five types of resources that can be encountered in the vastness of the galaxy. Some can only be found by scanning planets, while others can be discovered in interplanetary space.

Mini-Game "Reapers on the Hunt"

What is dangerous about scanning the system? The answer is simple — the Reapers. They methodically conquer the galaxy, destroying all organic life in their path. Naturally, they will detect the pulses sent out by the "Normandy" and joyfully rush to meet them.

If you turn on scanning — the Reapers will approach. The speed of their appearance is displayed on the "Reaper Readiness" gauge. It can fill up quickly or slowly depending on how many entry points the Reapers have into the system and how close the player is when using the scanner. As soon as the gauge fills up — the Reapers appear, and you need to hastily get away. They are fast, sometimes even faster than the "Normandy" (it all depends on the size of the Reaper), but still, a nimble player can go through the entire system, collecting resources and artifacts, and then make an interstellar jump. The Reapers won’t be able to follow you.

Upon your next entry into this system, the Reapers will continue to chase you. However, if you complete any mission, the information about your activities in the system resets, and the Reapers cease their hunt for you.
