A renowned krogan mercenary and bounty hunter, Urdnot Rex is also one of the last Battle Masters: rare fighters who combine powerful biotic abilities with the devastating power of modern weaponry. Having lived long and seen many adventures, Rex has heard of Captain Shepard during his travels and respects him as a worthy warrior. Despite the path of violence and killing for credits he has chosen, the krogan deeply cares about the fate of his people after the genophage and plans a new future for them.
Urdnot Rex is voiced by American actor Steven Barr:

Beginning
Born into Clan Urdnot on the krogan homeworld of Tuchanka, Rex soon achieved fame for his bravery in battle. He became the leader of one of the small tribes of Urdnot at a young age – the youngest krogan to receive such an honor in centuries. After the Krogan Rebellions, most of the remaining tribes wanted to continue fighting despite the genophage and its effect, which made reproduction nearly impossible. The most influential voices calling to return to arms belonged to several surviving Warlords, among them Rex's father – Jerrod.
Rex, however, had different ideals. He understood that the krogans lacked the numbers for war, and even if they had them – the genophage ensured they could not rebuild their population quickly enough. Instead of battles, he led his tribe focusing on reproduction to recreate at least one generation, and urged other tribes to do the same. Gradually, other krogans began to listen to Rex's ideas. This angered Warlord Jerrod, who called a Kranth – a gathering of tribes on neutral ground. Rex, sensing a trap, reluctantly agreed. He explained it to Shepard like this: “When your father invites you to a Kranth, even for us, there are a couple of undeniable laws.”
Rex and his best warriors met Jerrod's group in the burial grounds, a sacred place for krogans where violence is forbidden. When it became clear that Rex would never agree with him, Jerrod signaled his fighters. They sprang from their hiding places and ambushed Rex and his krogans. Rex managed to escape, but only after he plunged a dagger deep into Jerrod's chest. With the betrayal of his father, he became aware of the nature of the krogans: most would choose death over rebuilding society. Realizing that the proud warrior culture that exalted courage, strength, and honor – values enshrined in the krogan monument in the Citadel Presidium, had degraded into senseless brutality, Rex turned away from the rest of the krogans and left Tuchanka.
Mercenary
For three centuries, he worked as a bodyguard, mercenary, soldier of fortune, and bounty hunter. Rex has had several interesting adventures – including meeting mercenary Alina, and he even saw Saren Arterius hiring him to rob a cargo ship of the volus, although he didn't even know who that turian was until meeting Shepard. Tales of his exploits even reached the quarian flotilla. Despite his brutish nature, Rex rarely loses control. A small bit of anger in the krogan's voice is usually enough to achieve his goals. When his rage is unleashed, it is indeed a terrible sight. He does not speak much, but when he does, all his words are straightforward and uncompromising. He is always listened to until the end.
There are several ways to recruit Rex into the team. If Captain Shepard goes straight to Harkin in “Chora's Den,” the squad sees Rex giving his final warning to Fist's henchman. Or the Captain can catch him arguing with one of the officers in the C-Sec headquarters on the Citadel. Rex instinctively joins Shepard because the krogan was hired by the Shadow Broker to kill Fist. After the showdown with Fist, Rex remains in Shepard's team either out of gratitude or because he wants to be in the thick of a glorious battle against Saren Arterius, whom the Captain is pursuing. As Rex says: “A storm is coming, and you and Saren will be right in its center.” If Shepard deals with Fist before Rex joins, he can be found in the C-Sec headquarters near the elevator to Dock 422 and will ask to join the Captain's squad out of respect from one professional to another, having fully compensated Shepard's reward first.
Rex shows interest in biotics and respects their talents on the team: he describes Liara as a great asset in battle and believes the Alliance made a foolish decision to discontinue using L2 implants after seeing Lieutenant Alenko's abilities. Referencing krogan culture – where women stay at home and focus on reproduction, he tells Ashley that fighting beside a female is a new and intriguing experience, claiming that battles take on “a new flavor.”
However, like many krogans after the Rebellions, Rex harbors no feelings other than hatred for turians and considers Garrus a naïve little bird. He also hates salarians, calling them “sneaky lab rats.” Rex is completely opposed to Captain Kirrahe on Virmire when the salarian refers to the emergence of krogans as a mistake. If Rex is present on Noveria during the freeing of the queen of the rachni, he warns Shepard that if the rachni declare war again, his people will have to clean up again, “just like we did for the salarians.”
Personal Request
After several conversations with Rex aboard the Normandy, Shepard learns that the krogan has long been seeking his family's Armor, passed down from generation to generation, taken by a turian trader of krogan antiquities. Ton Actus amassed a fortune on krogan relics after the Rebellions. Shepard can help Rex reclaim his Armor, in exchange earning his gratitude and respect.
On Virmire when Rex learns that Shepard intends to destroy the cure for the genophage, he threatens to kill the Captain, reasoning that he could save his people. He is killed by Shepard depending on the approach taken in this situation of a renegade, or Ashley (by the Captain's order or on her own initiative). But if Shepard's persuasion skill is high or the Captain helped Rex obtain the Family Armor, he can be convinced that the true enemy is Saren, and the krogans he bred in laboratories are just the result of an experiment, not the worthy warriors of his people.
Krogan Leader
You look good for a dead man, Shepard. Nice to see that even death can’t hold you back.
If Rex survives the operation on the planet Virmire, he appears in the second part on the throne of the leader of Clan Urdnot. Otherwise, Shepard meets his brother, Urdnot Wreav, there on Tuchanka. Wreav thanks Shepard for killing his brother, which allowed him to take over the clan.
Rex warmly greets his old friend Shepard and reminisces about their past adventures together. The Captain notes that Rex has united a great number of krogans under the banner of Clan Urdnot to counter the effects of the genophage and strengthen the krogans as a people, using his victory over Saren. The krogan once again emphasized the importance of neutral grounds, where negotiations and exchanges became possible. Rex convinced the other tribes that if they pledged loyalty to him, he would protect their clan and especially the capable females, making any attempts to attack Rex foolish and doomed to fail. By changing millennia-old krogan traditions, he indeed faced resistance from orthodox warriors like Gatotog Uvenk.
When Grant completes his initiation rite, Rex accepts him into Clan Urdnot. If Shepard and Grant kill the threshers during the rite, Rex states that Grant is a possible replacement for him as Leader, as the last krogan capable of such a feat was himself centuries ago. In a conversation with Melon, the salarian argues that Rex is “too soft” and disagrees with experimenting on living krogans to cure the genophage. This portrays Rex as a wise and worthy leader.
When Shepard offers Rex to rejoin the team, the krogan reluctantly declines, explaining that he really wants to, but must stay to continue leading the krogans on the path to revival.
