Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is out on PC and consoles
The troubled action RPG about vampires in the "World of Darkness" Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has finally been released! Players have access to several editions, including the standard version, as well as the Deluxe Edition and Premium Edition. All of them can be purchased on Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
In Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, players take on the role of Fair, an elder vampire awakening in Seattle in 2024. Many will recognize the mysterious wanderer who, according to legends, appears when change is imminent. Fair must navigate the treacherous politics of the Camarilla Court to reclaim their vampire abilities. Along the way, Fair is guided by the voice of Fabien, a detective from the Malkavian clan, whose distorted perception of reality complicates distinguishing fact from fiction. Fair can choose from six clans, each with its own playstyle, outfits, and disciplines: the rebellious Brujah clan, blood magic adept Tremere, justice deliverers of Banu Hakim, charismatic Ventrue, charming Toreador, and shadow masters Lasombra.
On the winter streets of Seattle, Fair will meet those who are hard to trust but will inevitably influence the protagonist's fate. The Camarilla leaders of Seattle maintain order and ensure adherence to the Masquerade – the absolute law of the society of Kindred, which conceals vampires from humanity. Rejecting their authority, anarchs and the freed fight for survival and independence from the iron grip of the Camarilla. The choices made by Fair when encountering representatives of various factions and Fabien's past will ultimately determine the future of Seattle.
In Bloodlines 2, there are four difficulty modes that allow for a balance between storytelling and combat mechanics. In the easy mode, combat is significantly simplified to give players more opportunities to focus on the details of the plot and the mysteries of Seattle. Higher difficulty levels progressively increase, and to survive the night, mastery of Fair’s abilities will be essential.
The music for Bloodlines 2 was composed by Craig Stewart Garfinkle and Eimer Nunn, whose captivating atmospheric scores heightened the dark and mysterious tones of Seattle. The soundtrack also features music from composer Rick Shaffer, who worked on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. The voice acting includes Hara Yannas and Tommy Simian as Fair, Ronan Summers as Fabien, and other actors whose realistic and expressive performances brought to life the world of vampire politics and human conflicts in Seattle.
The storyline expansions Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 - Loose Cannon and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 - The Flower & the Flame will be released in 2026 and will be available with an Expansion Pass. These narrative packs allow players to explore Seattle through the eyes of Sheriff Benny Malduin and the Primogen Isabella Moore, respectively.
Player and reviewer opinions on the game have been mixed. On the one hand, the sequel has significantly improved combat mechanics and stealth. Additionally, modern technology has allowed for a meticulously crafted atmosphere of a winter night in Seattle. The storyline, in general, is also praised.
On the other hand, the game's narrative is almost entirely linear (there are moments when, even clearly refusing something, the hero still does it), and the open world does not offer anything interesting besides quests in the spirit of kill-fetch-find graffiti.
If one attempts to average public opinion, the consensus would be: Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a good Vampire: The Masquerade, but a poor Bloodlines 2. If the game were not a sequel to the legendary vampire RPG, but presented as an alternate view of the "Masquerade" (as has been done, for example, with several visual novels in the universe), the criticisms would be significantly fewer.
