G-Man in Facts and Speculations
Who is this?
There are several interpretations, for example, G(ordon Free)man.
Another interpretation is God man. It is also likely that G-man is short for Government man – a person from the government, a government agent, a state official.
Many believe it is an abbreviation for Glassman – the glass man. The reason is that bullets in HL1 bounce off him with the same sound sample as they do from armored glass in this game, and the console messages in HL1 play a role – when the player sees him, a message appears in the console saying "found glassman" – i.e., the glass man has been found.
Speech manner:
His strange voice is notably peculiar: G-Man speaks slowly, in a scratchy manner, emphasizing the wrong syllables, making unnecessary pauses, and awkwardly changing the tone of his voice, sometimes even in the middle of a word. Most of G-Man's phrases are spoken flatly, in a mechanical tone and without an accent. He often elongates the "S" sound in words ("Misssster Freeman"). Why does he speak this way? There is an opinion that with such a strange manner of speaking, G-Man tries to disguise himself, hide who he is, or perhaps it is a result of his tumultuous youth, experienced catastrophes, and battles.
Another theory suggests that this is not G-Man's real voice, and it goes through a translation device before reaching Gordon's (or Shepherd's) ears. This may explain all the aforementioned peculiarities (those who have used such devices will understand). Thus, it is theoretically possible that G-Man cannot speak independently at all.
Origin:
The leader of the vortigaunts, Nihilanth, gives a vague hint about G-Man when he speaks to Gordon in Zen, calling him "not a human" and adding, "he is waiting for you... you...".
When G-Man speaks to Shepherd at the end of Opposing Force, he remarks: "I admire people who can survive in extreme situations... like I did in my youth".
G-Man's abilities to stop time and move within it (for example, placing the protagonist in stasis between the first and second parts or stopping time during an explosion) indicate that G-Man is an older Gordon Freeman, attempting to correct some mistake from his past and ensuring that everything goes exactly as intended. For example, the crystal that causes the disaster at Black Mesa is brought by G-Man.
This enigmatic servant of the people intervenes only at the most critical moments, otherwise he is just an observer.
Headcrabs do not see G-Man. Headcrabs have no eyes; they sense the LIVING....
G-Man appears in photographs with scientists but is inexplicably crossed out...
P.S. Very clever, Mr. Freeman, but you shouldn't be here, and to be honest, you are not. Return to where you are meant to be and forget all about this until our next meeting (from unused game content)
Could this all just be a dream?
