Call of Duty: Black Ops is a first-person shooter. The game was released on almost every modern gaming platform, including the Nintendo DS. In its very first 24 hours, Call of Duty: Black Ops sold more than seven million copies, easily breaking the records set by Modern Warfare 2. Black Ops became the seventh installment in the popular Call of Duty series and the third game in the franchise developed by Treyarch.
The main character in Black Ops is Alex Mason, a U.S. Marine and CIA special agent. The game’s story is pieced together from his memories of secret U.S. military operations carried out in the 1960s. Besides Mason, several other characters also appear in Black Ops’ single-player campaign. All these “heroes” have one thing in common: they are saboteurs. They specialize in stealthy infiltration, locating and eliminating targets, retrieving valuable information from computers and safes, planting explosives, and other less-than-honorable methods of warfare. And in Black Ops, these specialists operate not alone, but in teams. In addition to the traditional missions, the campaign gives players the chance to take the controls of a Mi-24 and command operations from aboard an SR-71 Blackbird.
Despite the gaming community’s boundless love for it, Call of Duty: Black Ops’ multiplayer mode offers nothing revolutionary. It is still a fairly standard selection of modes for team and solo competitions. It’s worth noting that Call of Duty: Black Ops, like World at War, Treyarch’s previous game, includes Zombies mode, in which players have to fight off zombies, often using rather unconventional weapons.
