StarCraft is a science fiction real-time strategy game. The action of the game takes place in the 26th century in the remote corners of our Galaxy. The plot revolves around three races: humans (Terrans), Zergs—insect-like biological organisms—and Protoss—humanoid beings with psychic abilities, ancient enemies of the Zergs. StarCraft was one of the first real-time strategies where all three sides of the conflict are significantly different from each other, yet the balance of power is maintained. Another distinctive feature of StarCraft is the shared storyline for all three races.
The story of StarCraft has been significantly expanded in numerous fiction literature about the game universe, as well as in the expansion StarCraft: Brood War. Last year, a full-fledged sequel, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, was released. According to the press and players, the game became the best strategy and one of the best games of 2010.
StarCraft is considered not only one of the best representatives of its genre but also one of the most important computer games in history. The total sales of the game have already surpassed 11 million copies. StarCraft enjoys particular popularity in South Korea, the mecca of esports. Blizzard's creation has been more than just a game in this country for over 10 years; it has become a national sport, bringing fabulous money to organizers and participants of such competitions. Besides that, StarCraft gave birth to the now-popular gaming service Battle.net—another creation of Blizzard.
