Dag Lombardi on the Possibility of Combining L4D and L4D2
Dag Lombardi stated that Valve does not plan to connect Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, but the sequel will include elements to keep the L4D community united.
Speaking to IncGamers, Lombardi responded to a question about Valve's efforts to potentially unite the two games, saying, "This is not quite what is a top priority for Valve right now."
"Left 4 Dead 2 will be a separate game," Lombardi stated. "That is, if you bought both games, how can you play directly from two communities? First and foremost, we are currently focusing on how to carefully keep these two different communities together as one.
"I think we have made a good decision now in creating tools for modding enthusiasts. For example, if you create content now, with very little modifications it will function smoothly in Left 4 Dead 2 just as well as it will in the original and current modified version. With the recent releases, we want to tell all Left 4 Dead players that we are transforming all our developments for user convenience, trying to keep people together in one community as much as possible."

So not a merging... But fortunately, content from the first game can easily be imported into the sequel. How long will it take before fearless PC modders create a port of the first game into the second? It would be interesting to find out.
