"Normandy"
**"Normandy"**
"SSV Normandy SR-1" – a starship of the Systems Alliance. It is a prototype of a "deep reconnaissance" frigate, the first in the eponymous "Normandy" series, jointly developed by the Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy with funding from the Citadel Council. It was created for solitary reconnaissance missions in the depths of unstable regions, utilizing its most advanced stealth system, made possible by an experimental engine core.
Commissioned in 2183, the "Normandy" was initially under the command of David Anderson, but was transferred to Captain Shepard when he became the first human Spectre, serving Shepard as his personal ship, operational base, and home.
Interior Layout
The "Normandy" consists of three main decks:
Command Deck
It includes an airlock, the pilot's cabin (where Shepard can converse with Joker) at the nose of the ship. At the rear, you will find the CIC, a galactic map (managed by Navigator Pressly), and the radio room. The bridge is also used as a meeting room to discuss mission results and allows Shepard to communicate with the Citadel Council personally.
The Combat Information Center (CIC) of the "Normandy" is completely different from anything seen before. In Alliance ships, commanding officers are usually positioned in the center of the room to facilitate communication with subordinates, but the bridge of the "Normandy" is located behind the CIC. This is because of the "Normandy"’s Turian design, where their captains prefer to observe all their subordinates at once rather than be in their midst; engineers wanted to study how this principle would work with a human command structure. When needed, the officers of the "Normandy" can use unique portable communicators to contact the crew. The pilot's cabin area is equipped with internal kinetic barriers designed to protect the pilot from vacuum exposure if the CIC loses air pressure.
Crew Quarters
To access the second deck, primarily made up of living quarters, you can go down one of the two staircases located on either side of the CIC.
This is the main living deck of the "Normandy," where the mess hall, cryopods, personal quarters, and the captain's office can also be found, along with the escape pod hatches and the medical bay, where you might encounter Dr. Chakwas. Liara T'Soni spends her time in the lab and the storage room at the far end of the ship. The medical bay is also equipped with a panacelin dispenser.
You can find Kaidan Alenko near the control panel for the cryopods. The captain's gear locker is directly opposite Kaidan.
Engineering Deck
The elevator located on the living deck is used to descend to the engineering and cargo sections of the "Normandy." The M35 Mako is stored in this section; Ashley Williams is cleaning rifles next to the squad equipment lockers; Garrus Vakarian is busy with the Mako; Urdnot Wrex is leaning against the wall across from the Mako. Opposite Wrex is the quartermaster of the "Normandy," who sells new gear to Shepard.
In this garage, there is a passage leading to the engineering section containing the "Normandy"'s engine core. Here, Shepard may meet Engineer Adams and Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, monitoring the systems and keeping the engine in working order.
Technology
The stealth system of the "Normandy" is its most notable feature. For centuries, it had been assumed that creating a stealth ship was impossible. The heat generated by standard ship operations is easily detected in space, where the temperature is close to absolute zero. However, the "Normandy" utilizes special heat-retaining absorbers located deep within the ship's hull.
The stealth system has certain limitations. The system cannot operate while traveling at FTL (Faster Than Light) speeds because the blue trails emitted by the "Normandy"'s engines cannot be concealed by the absorbers, leading to simple detection—it's enough to just look out the window to spot it. However, this rarely occurs, as most ships rely on scanners rather than visual contact, and noticing trails in space can be quite challenging. The "Normandy" can move at "silent running" for about 2-3 hours or drift passively through a system for several days before it needs to shed heat and reveal its position. The retained heat must be dissipated, or it will reach a level where the crew would cook alive.
The stealth system operates using an experimental "Tantal" Engine Core, which is twice the size of any other core. Tali'Zorah nar Rayya is amazed at how the Alliance was able to fit it into such a small ship. Joker points out that such a large core affects the handling balance of the "Normandy," but it’s nothing he can't deal with. The "Tantal" generates a special mass field in which the "Normandy" "falls," allowing it to move without using a heat-emitting engine. The core not only makes the "Normandy" silent and fast but also allows it to fly longer at FTL before draining the engine.
If the "Normandy" experiment proves successful in field trials, full-scale production of ships in this series is expected in the future.
Like all frigates, the "Normandy" is equipped with the "SEARCH" defensive laser system, kinetic barriers, and a central mass accelerator cannon. It can also be further outfitted with advanced disintegrator torpedoes of the "Dart" system.

Mass Effect
During a test flight, the "Normandy" was launched from Arcturus and headed towards Eden Prime to covertly retrieve the Prothean Beacon that had been uncovered on the planet. Unfortunately, a surprise attack by the Geth complicated the mission, and the beacon was destroyed. The "Normandy" then continued its journey to the Citadel, where Captain Anderson resigned his duties as commanding officer, allowing Shepard to take his place.
Although Shepard worked at the Citadel, the "Normandy" was still under Alliance jurisdiction, and its uniqueness led to the assignment of additional missions for Admiral Hackett, particularly those where the stealth system was useful. There was an amusing moment when "Normandy" was inspected by Rear Admiral Michalovich, who was annoyed that the ship was given to Shepard instead of entering his fleet as originally intended. He claimed that the "Normandy" was an "overcomplicated vessel," too expensive (noting that a heavy cruiser could be built for the same cost), and asserted that it had no practical application. In response, Shepard was able to dispel his misconceptions while defending the innovations of the "Normandy." While piloting the "Normandy," Joker saved Shepard in several situations: executing a stellar evacuation from Therum; dropping the Mako outside the Geth radar on Virmire, then getting off the planet before a nuclear explosion; and making virtually impossible Mako drops on Ilos, with only 12 meters of open ground.
The stealth system of the "Normandy" made it the only ship capable of sneaking into the Terminus Systems unnoticed, chasing Saren Arterius all the way to Ilos, but the Council rejected such risk, and Ambassador Donnel Udina ordered the "Normandy" to be kept in dock, prohibiting all launches. With Captain Anderson's help, Shepard commandeered the "Normandy" and brought it to Ilos, where Joker successfully dropped the Mako before rejoining the Fifth Fleet in the Andura sector.
The "Normandy" led the assault on the Harbinger, and due to its outstanding speed and maneuverability, after Shepard disabled the Reaper's shields, it destroyed the Harbinger. Following the battle, Shepard took the "Normandy" into space in search of a way to stop the Reapers.
Mass Effect 2
At the beginning of Mass Effect 2, it shows how the "Normandy" patrols the Omega Nebula cluster for Geth near the planet Alchera. An unknown ship suddenly appears and attacks it, despite the advanced stealth system that was activated. The pursuer unleashes the power of a deadly laser, which easily penetrates the armor of the "Normandy." Several crew members, including Navigator Pressly, die during the attack while the others evacuate in escape pods. Captain Shepard remains behind to save Joker, who desperately tries to handle the crumbling ship. Shepard manages to get Joker to the last escape pod, but the attacker delivers a final blow that completely destroys the ship. While the pod with Joker is successfully rescued, Shepard is thrown into space by the explosion and drifts unconscious among the wreckage of the "Normandy" in orbit of Alchera.
In the following two years, Captain Shepard's body is restored and brought back to life through the Lazarus Project conducted by the secret pro-human organization Cerberus. They also built and handed over to Shepard a new ship with a design similar to "Normandy-1," but larger in size and fully covered with Cerberus insignia. Shepard and Joker decide to name this new ship "Normandy-2" in honor of the original "Normandy."
The new "Normandy" is approximately twice the size of the original, has five decks instead of three on the "Normandy." If Shepard asks the ship's AI how Cerberus was able to obtain classified data from the "Normandy" to create "Normandy-2," it reveals that Cerberus used its influence to compel the Alliance to build the first "Normandy." Cerberus needed to acquire secret Turian technologies, and this opportunity was the most convenient.
Throughout the events of Mass Effect 2, Captain Shepard uses the new "Normandy" to navigate the galaxy in search of the best biotics, scientists, and fighters, aiming to assemble a team capable of defeating the Collectors and putting an end to their anti-human abduction mission throughout the galaxy.
Interesting Facts:
• The "Normandy" is named after the Normandy operation of 1944, a pivotal battle in World War II.
• The virtual intelligence of the "Normandy" (which can only be heard during character creation, when landing, and during events in DLC Bring Down the Sky) is voiced by Belinda Cornish.
• According to Ashley's sister Sarah, Alliance messages about the "Normandy" can be found on the extranet. However, very little information is available (as the technologies of the "Normandy" are classified), and news also covers certain squad members.
• The "Normandy" is not the only ship of its class built by the Alliance. Citadel news reports (in Mass Effect 2) about the stealth frigate "Ayn-Jalute," used by Alliance forces to repel a Batarian raid on one of the human colonies.
• Upon closer inspection, it turns out that the "Normandy" has two special turbines. This is surely the reason for its amazing maneuverability. This is especially noticeable at the start of Mass Effect 2, where the damaged turbines barely hold and operate erratically.
• The "Tantal" Engine Core and Engineer Adams may be a reference to the Star Trek universe. In a TOS episode "The Dagger of the Mind," Dr. Tristan Adams is the chief overseer of the Tantal penal colony. In the game, Adams monitors the experimental "Tantal" core.
• In the game, the "Normandy" is significantly larger on the inside than on the outside.
• The name Normandy SR-1 may reference the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest piloted aircraft in the world. Like the SR-1, SR-71 was a revolutionary reconnaissance ship.
