My impressions of "The Witcher".
Hello everyone \_
In this post, you won’t find any news, mod descriptions, technical specifications, or anything of the sort. Instead, the content is completely original - no copying here \_ I just decided to share what I think and feel about "The Witcher".
The text was written by me on the night of March 23-24, 2009, after the first launch of the additional adventure from the enhanced edition of "The Witcher".
I completed the original version of the game, barely tearing myself away from the screen, right after its release. Recently, I got my hands on the enhanced version.
I installed it on my girlfriend's computer - she wanted to take a closer look at the concept. I just turned it on to check how it works and... realized that tomorrow after university I would be playing the additional adventures. The graphics have noticeably improved, the game has been polished to brilliance, but, most importantly, "The Witcher" somehow manages to create an atmosphere that I feel less and less frequently over time...
In the past, a simple book by Perumov, a tabletop game, or a not-so-great gaming day on the "training ground" was enough. Then, not all fantasy books became enjoyable, Perumov rather irritated me either with his lack of taste or with the fact that he wrote books aimed at the average Russian schoolboy - a loser, there was never enough time for tabletop games, and I hadn't been on field games for nearly a hundred years. Only occasionally did some particularly successful book or computer game awaken this feeling in me. I don't know how to describe it. Sometimes it awakens when you look at the stars, sometimes when you read a book and live alongside the characters - discovering new lands, fulfilling ancient prophecies, traveling through land, water, and air, talking to or fighting dragons...
I don't know, maybe this fades with age. I sincerely hope not. There are several computer games that have evoked this feeling in me. "Might & Magic", "Daggerfall", "Baldur's Gate", "Gothic".
"The Witcher" can easily be placed in the same category as these games. This game tells a Story. About life, death, forests, and mountains, love and honor, wanderings, and dreams. When the first version was released, I immersed myself in the world of "The Witcher" wholeheartedly. Just as I once immersed myself in reading the book about Geralt. I completed it, hardly tearing myself away from the screen. Tonight before bed, I turned on the additional adventures on my girlfriend's computer to see how they work, and realized I wouldn't go to sleep until I install "The Witcher" for myself. This game reminded me of my childhood dream.
I don't know what the secret is, but you believe in "The Witcher". You believe in Dandelion, who sings in the tavern about Geralt's adventures, you believe that the mountains and forests surrounding Kaer Morhen are real. Even though these are just two short adventures, I will enjoy them immensely. It’s a pity that the company won't be able to release "Rise of the White Wolf". Sometimes I feel that consoles lack games made "with soul", that convey something beyond good graphics, beautiful design, and reflex training. "The Witcher" would become one of those games.
In general, if you haven't read The Witcher - read it!!! If you haven't played The Witcher - play it!!! If you read the book and completed the game but haven't gotten to the additional adventures - now is the time!!!
