What "Allods Online" is Made Of
"Allods" is constantly criticized for being incredibly similar to WoW and stealing everything that can be taken from there. Others say it’s all slander, and that "Allods" is better than "Warcraft", so the critics are asked to drink poison and smash their faces against the walls.
I hope this topic helps us all understand and find common ground.
So, let’s start with the obvious. The appearance of "Allods" is strikingly similar to WoW. I’m not sure there will be many who will argue with that. For example, here is a picture of elves from these two games.
The similarities, in my opinion, are obvious. In many screenshots, you can find entire chunks of the distant "Warcraft" lands.
I believe that such copying deserves condemnation. To so brazenly redraw a game is too much. However, I want to say a few words in defense of the domestic MMO.
Firstly, Nival sometimes creates landscapes that are so distinct and "Russian" that WoW might as well go out for a smoke. The artists captured the spirit of the game, managing to show the vast differences between the states with just two cities. The game has both the spirit of freedom and the spirit of totalitarianism. WoW lacks this. There are beautiful views, but there is no "spirit".
However, I reiterate that this doesn’t absolve the fact that the developers should be smacked on the hands for such a blatant redraw.
Especially right here. Let’s look at the images:
The first image is from "Allods", the second and third are from DnD. Is there a difference? Yet the illithid is a brand of a well-known role-playing system. And even if Nival had bought it for their game, would its appearance in the world of "Allods" be justified? Again, it smells of plagiarism...
Let’s also mention the interface, which also strongly resembles that of "Warcraft". Yes, many games copy it, but in "Allods" it resembles the original too closely. Is it correct to borrow so blatantly?
We cannot overlook the storyline, although it's more complicated with it. From what I’ve seen, it’s, for example, NIICHAVO. A well-known title, which can also be considered a brand. But the developers introduce it somewhat awkwardly. Yes, there are duplicates, but otherwise, it’s a completely different place. Some kind of pyramid, a dungeon. What relation does all this have to the book? And if none, then why do it this way?
There is also Cthulhu in the game. Moreover, this is not just borrowing; it's also flirting with a younger audience. Why Cthulhu of all things? Are there really no other monsters?..
One can recall the new trailer where characters fight like in "300". Could this be a reference to the original? But Nival has too many such references...
Overall, I like the game. And its style is pleasing. But it saddens me that the product turns out to be too unoriginal. Too much is borrowed, and it’s too blatant. To the point of complete repetition.
What do you all say?
