Team Fortress 2 is a well-known multiplayer team shooter. In a sense, it is a continuation of the old Team Fortress Classic, which, in turn, is a remake of the ancient Team Fortress mod for the first Quake. Interestingly, the Team Fortress 2 development team is led by the creators of the original Team Fortress, John Cook and Robin Walker.
The game was first announced in 1998, and at that time, it was supposed to resemble the Battlefield series with its pseudo-realistic gameplay and design. However, over nine years of development, much has changed, and the serious, disciplined soldiers marching in formation have transformed into the gang of misfits we all know. Perhaps this was the right decision, as it distinguished the game from the crowd.
Upon release, journalists praised it from all sides, appreciating its graphical style, balanced gameplay, comedic elements, and character development. This is notable, considering that for six years prior, Team Fortress 2 was considered a ‘vaporware’ that would never be released.
Like its predecessors, Team Fortress 2 focuses on the rivalry between two teams. Although the teams are differentiated only by color, there are nine classes available to play, each vastly different from the others.
At the time of release, the game featured only six maps, but subsequent updates added another twenty-four maps, nine arenas, and several training levels. In addition to official maps, there are also fan-created levels.
Regarding the number of players on a single map, the initial official maximum was twenty-four players. This number was later increased to thirty-two, and unofficial fan modifications expanded this limit to thirty-six.
