Allow me to introduce
War.ru or simply Var is a browser-based MMORPG with a first-person view. The game is styled after old RPGs from the early to mid-90s, utilizing modern technologies and graphical capabilities. The game was launched on March 27 of this year, so there are still many imperfections, but the game is visibly evolving: substantial updates that are noticeable to the average player are released every one to two weeks.
Overall, the game's interface resembles that of other modern Russian browser games: the lower half of the screen is occupied by a chat; the upper half is divided into three parts: the character view, the actual game area, and the mini-map.
The interface is where all similarities with other browser games end. Even though a first-person view has been attempted in some other games, the first-person view in Var is the primary and only way to observe the surrounding world. Navigating without the mini-map is very challenging, despite the fact that the location maps are currently quite small: only 10x10 cells.
Yes, movement across locations is carried out in a cell-by-cell manner. Most available locations measure 10x10 cells, although some instanced locations, such as dungeons, are already accessible with a size of 20x20.
Despite the cell-based movement, Var is entirely real-time: the speed of moving from cell to cell varies for all mobs and depends on the spells used by characters. Combat also occurs in real-time. It may seem unusual, but in reality, it is very dynamic.
Currently, there are three areas available in the Var world: Gardens, Forest, and Swamp - a city and two dungeons. Each area features its own style of the surrounding world and its own mobs. Dungeons, as they should, stand out with increased difficulty but reward players with worthy prizes.
Locations are teeming with monsters, although on small maps like 10x10, it can feel cramped.
When creating a new character, players can choose from three races: humans, arkeys, and svens - analogous to the more familiar humans, elves, and orcs; and three classes: more familiar warrior, mage, and archer. Races essentially differ only in their unique racial abilities. Classes, however, vary significantly: classes have their own ability lines and even their own role parameters.
Each character has two experience lines: PvE and PvP experience. By killing mobs and completing quests, characters gain PvE experience, the levels of which grant access to new, more powerful abilities and enhance character attributes. Characters cannot manually modify their stats by adding experience points to specific characteristics in Var. Character attributes can only be influenced through gear.
PvP experience is gained, of course, by killing other players. Levels of PvP experience unlock access to modifiers that enhance character abilities. PvP also provides points that can be spent on purchasing advanced gear.
The clan system is not very developed yet, but in the wake of unsuccessful PvP battles, clan wars are already igniting.
