Michael Wolf, the level designer of the original “Heroes III,” played the “Heroes III” remake
Michael Wolf — a level designer for the original “Heroes III” — was more fond of RTS games like Age of Empires, WarCraft II, and StarCraft, as well as shooters such as Doom, Quake, and Half-Life. However, “Heroes II-III” won him over with their complexity. Michael Wolf is a player who relies more on the sword than on magic. One of the first maps he created was Heroes of Might, not Magic.
- Michael Wolf thanked the game's fans for 27 years of support.
- In Wolf's opinion, the remake is not AI slop.
- Level designer Michael Wolf hopes that the original soundtrack by Paul Anthony Romero will also be included in the remake. In his opinion, a vital part of the game is missing without the OST. He compared playing the remake without the original soundtrack to watching “Star Wars” without John Williams's music.
- Michael was impressed by the high quality of the graphics in the Castle, while the animation upon first entering the city also gave Michael a pleasant impression.
- The designer spoke positively about the intuitive, updated interface (the 3D version) in the city.
- Michael was pleased to see a “Hire All” button in the Fort, which was not present in the original.
- Michael Wolf liked the hotkeys that make it convenient to organize heroes' armies.
- Michael Wolf liked the camera on the game's adventure map, which can be zoomed in and out. The ability to rotate the camera is absent from the remake; Michael noted that players need to be careful not to miss a resource hidden behind the forest. In Michael's opinion, adding the ability to rotate the camera would be an excellent addition, but it is not urgently needed.
- The sound effects seemed excessive to the level designer, while the button for opening the game menu was tiny. The hero's army panel also seemed too small.
- Michael Wolf noted that he would like to see the amount of mana points during combat, for example in the spellbook.
- The level designer noted the polished creature designs and smooth combat animations in the remake. Wolf also praised the pleasant level of animation on the adventure map. UbiSoft added animated deer to the game's forests — it brought them to life!
- Michael also praised the game's expanses of water, its rivers and their animation, as well as the change from day to night after ending a turn.
- 3D made the game more immersive, according to Michael Wolf. In the designer's opinion, the developers did a good job of transferring the units' models into 3D.
- Michael Wolf found the idle animation of the Pikemen at 3x speed during combat strange; in the level designer's opinion, the unit's light infantry looked like they were hyperventilating.
- Michael Wolf is cautiously optimistic about the remake overall; for Michael Wolf, the spirit of “Heroes III” has been preserved in the remake.
